Accessibility

Goals

It is Barcelona City Council's aim that everyone, regardless of disability or age, or whether they are accessing the website using unconventional technologies, can browse pages on the http://www.bcn.cat web portal without any access difficulties by using the http://www.ciajbcn.cat website.

In order to achieve this aim we have followed the WCAG 1.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 1.0) established by the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) working group belonging to the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).

New functionality

The following are examples of the functionality that has been implemented on the http://www.ciajbcn.cat/ website to enable access to all content:

The portal's visual characteristics (font style, font and background colour, etc.) have been defined using the style sheet so users can adapt the text to their preferences.

Font sizes have been defined using relative units so that the font size can be increased or decreased using the browser options. The table below shows how to modify the font size on the most commonly-used browsers:

Modifying the text size
 BrowserMenu action
Browser logosFirefoxView > Text size > Increase
Internet ExplorerView > Text size > Larger
Internet Explorer MobileView > Zoom > Larger
KonquerorView > Increase / Reduce font size
OperaView > Zoom > %
SafariView > Make text bigger

If a user accesses the http://www.ciajbcn.cat/ website through a browser that does not support a style sheet that is no problem since the pages have been developed in such a way that they always provide an access resource if it is unsupported.

The pages are clearly structured so users can see all of the content. The information can also be read with a screen reader or by users who turn off the style sheet, etc. The section headers, lists and all aspects that aid overall comprehension of the website have been defined with this aim in mind.

Different formats and new technologies

Due to advances in new technologies, Barcelona City Council offers the public services, applications and documents in other formats which sometimes require a program (software) or plug-in in order to be able to access the content. These are provided free of charge and are freely accessible in all cases. If you do not have these resources you can access the following web resources to download them:
